The Kentucky Derby has been held annually in Louisville, KY since 1875.  It is run on the first Saturday in May and is limited to thoroughbred horses that are 3 years old.  The race is currently run at a distance of 1 1/4 miles and has been since 1895.  If you plan on attending the Derby, plan ahead to get tickets.  The best seats are often very expensive and the closer you get to Derby day the prices for the tickets rise dramatically.

General admission tickets to the Kentucky Derby are available at the track and are offered on a first come first serve basis.  General admission tickets offer you access to the "infield" area of the track and standing room in the paddock area.  Finding a hotel room in Louisville during Derby week is almost as hard as getting tickets to the race.  Frankfort, Lexington, and Cincinnati are about 1 -1/2 hour's drive from Churchill Down's and often handle the derby overflow.
