Horse and Equine health and mortality insurance.

Different insurance options available for your horse and equine business.

Insuring your horse is imperative when you consider the inherent risks associated with horse racing and the equine business. Owning and racing horses involves a large financial commitment and making sure that your horse has the proper insurance coverage is important.  Within the horse racing industry, the most common type of equine insurance is a mortality policy.  Unfortunately, thoroughbred horse racing is a very risky sport.  We have all seen horse injured tragically on the racetrack or even when training.  Although nothing can help with the emotional strain of dealing with a catastrophic injury to your horse, the financial devastation associated with it can be alleviated by carrying the proper amount of insurance coverage. Talking with an expert in the horse insurance business will be well worth your time and they can guide you through the different types of insurance policies available.  You will also need to consult with your veterinarian to obtain a health certificate.  Your veterinarian will examine your horse (at your expense) in order to complete the forms required by your insurance underwriter.

Equine Mortality Insurance
Covers your horse for death or the need to be euthanized on humane grounds from any accident, sickness or disease. The cost will depend on the age of the horse insured and what type of horse you are insuring; racehorse, foal, broodmare, etc.

Foal Insurance
Covers the pregnancy of your mare (including the death of the mare). A claim is paid in the event the mare is not in foal or, if the foal does not survive to the expiry of the policy, which is usually 30 days after the birth.

Horse Transit Insurance
Covers your horse over the initial loading and transit, until safely delivered at the final destination. Transit insurance can also cover a horse for up to 30 days after arrival. Policies vary, so check with your insurance agent.

Stallion Infertility insurance
Coverage insures against the possibility of a stallion becoming totally and permanently infertile or incapable of servicing mares as a result of an accident, sickness or disease. First Season or Congenital infertility insurance is also available for horses going to stud for their first season.

Equine and horse liability insurance
If a horse you own is involved in an accident, liability insurance will indemnify you against the financial consequences of a successful claim.  There are many scenarios around the racetrack and barn in which a worker or bystander can become injured due to the actions of your horse.

Horse health insurance policies
This coverage will help you control unforeseen veterinary expenses for events related to the health of your horse. This type of policy will cover reasonable and customary veterinary, medical and surgical care charges necessitated by accident, injury or illness. Usually, a deductible will apply to each claim during the period of insurance coverage.

Loss of use equine policy
Loss of use coverage is most commonly used for those involved in showing and eventing and is used in the event that the horse becomes permanently unfit for use in the show ring, due to an accident, injury or illness.
