The American cowboy hat is recognized around the world as part of "cowboy" lore. A cowboy hat can be found on a ranch hand, oil-man, cowboy, poker player, or even the President of the United States. Cowboy hats were designed to be functional, protecting the wearer from the sun and rain. You could drink out of it, fan yourself with it, or swat at an unruly steer or horse. Today, though still functional, they are mainly worn because they look good. John B. Stetson is credited with designing and marketing the first cowboy hat, which he called the "Boss of the Plains." Whether you are a working cowboy, Derby winning horse trainer, or President of the United States you will always look better wearing a cowboy hat.
