Tapit
burst on the national scene with his runaway win in the
G3 Laurel Futurity in November of 2003. It was only his
second career start, and his first going two turns, yet
he rolled through the stretch like a runaway train. Minor
physical issues compromised Tapit’s training throughout
the spring of 2004. But guided by his masterful trainer
Michael Dickinson, the gray son of Pulpit put up his finest
performance in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. Even though
his trainer conceded his charge was not 100% fit, Tapit
surged to the lead near the wire to defeat Master David
and Eddington. He then went on to the Kentucky Derby as
one of the top choices to wear the Garland of Roses.
