Horsehat.com Fast Fact: St. Averil's sire, Saint Ballado, also the sire of 2004 Eclipse Champion Ashado.

While St. Averil is short on experience, he is very long on talent. He has accomplished more in his five-start career that most thoroughbreds ever will. The $500,000 yearling purchase made his first appearance on November 9, 2003 in a 6 ½ furlong Maiden Special race at Santa Anita and he won easily by three lengths over the promising Dwango. Forty one days later, in a move akin to a high school football player jumping to the NFL, St Averil stepped up to the big time in the G1 Hollywood Futurity. The son of St. Averil certainly handled himself admirably in the Futurity, running a strong second to the top colt Lion Heart. On January 17, 2004, he proved that effort was no fluke, when he surged to win the G2 Santa Catalina at Santa Anita.

Foot problems plagued the promising Saint Ballado colt and he was forced to miss the Super Bowl for his generation, the Kentucky Derby on May 1. He, is however fully recovered and back in training for his return to racing. And it’s likely only a matter of time before he’s back playing in the big time.
