SCRAPPY
T WILL SKIP TURF RACES
Preakness runner-up Scrappy T did
not take well to his first experience running
in a competitive setting on turf and will not
enter the all-new Grand Slam of Grass, his trainer
said Friday night.
"He
just didn't take to it," trainer Rob Bailes
said after watching Scrappy T work out for a
mile on turf at Colonial Downs under Preakness
jockey Ramon Dominguez.
"Ramon
said he didn't have the same spurt that he had
on the dirt. It's a little disappointing, but
you've got to go with what your jockey's telling
you."
Bailes
and owner Marshall Dowell of Mechanicsville,
Va., about 50 miles north of the race track
in New Kent County, skipped the Belmont Stakes
with Scrappy T, deciding instead to bring him
to Virginia to train on turf with an eye on
the Grand Slam.
Now,
Bailes plans to continue working Scrappy T on
the dirt at Colonial Downs, but with a possible
eye on going to Thistledown for the Ohio Derby
on July 4.
