Physical ability was never a question with Read the Footnotes. He cost $320,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two Year-Old in Training sale in the spring of 2003 and went on to win a pair of Graded stakes races that fall. But it was his performance in the February 14, 2004 Fountain of Youth that revealed the heart of a champion. You might say the footnotes of the Fountain of Youth read: This horse has it all.

Entering the stretch, Read the Footnotes and Second of June had run away from the rest of the Fountain of Youth field, and the stage was set for a dramatic duel. The two ran in tandem down the Gulfstream Park straightaway, matching fluid strides and competitive spirits. Second of June held the advantage by the slimmest of margins for most of the last quarter mile. But with the wire in sight, jockey Jerry Bailey asked his charge for one last burst, and Read the Footnotes courageously surged past his rival in the final stride.
