Grindstone has been a major player in the drama of the
Triple Crown the past decade. He prevailed in one of the
most thrilling Kentucky Derby finishes of all time when
he put his nose in front of Cavonnier in 1996. That courageous
effort gave his owner, the late Kentucky businessman and
legendary philanthropist W. T. Young, a win in the most
prized of races. It also denied longtime California owners
Mr. and Mrs. Walker a precious victory they thought they
had when their horse hit the wire. Nine years later, it
was Grindstone’s son Birdstone
who grabbed the headlines in the Belmont Stakes. A record
crowd turned out at Belmont in early June 2004 to watch
Smarty Jones win racing’s Holy Grail: the Triple Crown.
But in deep stretch it was Birdstone who surged past Smarty
to win by a length. His win brought both jubilation and
agonizing heartache, just his sire did in the ’96
Derby.
