Horsehat.com Fast Fact: Funny Cide has
now won three $1 million dollar races, the Kentucky Derby,
the Preakness and the Jockey Club Gold Cup.
Small owners from upstate New York aren’t supposed
to win the Kentucky Derby. Geldings aren’t supposed
to win the Kentucky Derby either. And horses born and raised
in New York certainly are not supposed to win America’s
most prized race. That helps explain the huge fan following
that Funny Cide now has. In May of 2003 he became only the
third gelding and very first New York-bred to win the Kentucky
Derby. And he did so for a group of small-time owners from
Sag Harbor New York, who shuttled to Churchill Downs on
a rented yellow school bus. Funny Cide validated his Derby
win with an emphatic triumph in the Preakness two weeks
later.
In 2004 Funny Cide is back again winning important races.
After third-place runs in the G1 Donn Handicap and G2 New
Orleans Handicap, he defeated G1-winner Evening Attire in
the G3 Excelsior in the spring at Aqueduct. Over the summer
the son of Distorted Humor placed in the G1 Suburban, G2
MassCap and G2 Saratoga BC Handicap. In the G1 Jockey Club
on October 2, Funny Cide sprang back into the big time.
He rallied relentlessly down the lane to defeat Newfoundland
and The Cliff’s Edge, leaving four other grades stakes
winners in his wake.
