Price: $19.95

How to Order

Fire Slam, winner of the grade III $100,000 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds, will get a short break to heal a quarter crack in his left hind foot, and will be trained up to the grade II, $600,000 Louisiana Derby on March 7, skipping the grade III Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 15.

"The main goal is to get the foot well, so that he's comfortable," said trainer David Carroll. "He's still pretty sore, but the plan all along was to go into the Louisiana Derby off the (Lecomte)."

Carroll said that Fire Slam, who raced with a bar shoe in the Lecomte, would walk for 7-9 days before treating and repatching the foot.

The son of Grand Slam proved to his trainer that he could handle two turns against top company, as well as displaying the grittiness to overcome his physical ailment.

"The race at Delta (Downs) was hard to tell because of the way the track is," said Carroll, referring to Fire Slam's second place finish in the $1 million Delta Jackpot at his first start around two turns.

"He's always been a horse with a lot of talent. To see him relax and kick at the end ... he was tractable," the trainer said about the Lecomte. "He changed leads on cue. He was very professional. That's just a horse with talent, and there is nothing I can do about that. He's been very brave and I'm very proud of this horse."
