Horsehat.com Fast Fact: Eurosilver’s
sire, Unbridled’s Song was
the post-time favorite for the 1996 Kentucky Derby won by
Grindstone.
Last October at Keeneland, Eurosilver made a lasting impression.
Spotting the field position (breaking from post 10) and
experience (making only his third career start), Eurosilver
proved to be much the best in the G2 Breeders’ Futurity.
Jockey Javier Castellano masterfully angled Eurosilver over
to the inside soon after the start, saving valuable ground
going into the first turn. As Cooperation and Distressed
dueled through fast fractions down the backstretch, Castellano
positioned Eurosilver in the middle of the eleven horse
field. By the time they reached the far turn it was Value
Plus who had taken over the lead with Eurosilver some
five lengths behind. But in a matter of strides, Eurosilver
turned that deficit into two length advantage. He swept
by Value Plus with great ease and simply rolled through
the stretch, winning by a final margin of 4 3/4 lengths.
The multiple stakes winners Limehouse and The
Cliff’s Edge were also left in his wake.
That singular performance was enough to make Eurosilver
one of the favorites for the 2004 Kentucky Derby. A mysterious
neck infection would, however, dashed dreams of roses for
Eurosilver and his connections.
After missing several months, Eurosilver is now back in
action for new trainer Carl Nafzger. In his return to the
races, he finished second to the unbeaten Commentator in
the Perryville Stakes at Keeneland.
