The Kentucky Derby field is limited to 20 horses. If more than 20 horses enter the race, the final entries are determined by the amount of graded stakes earnings each horse has accumulated. When making Kentucky Derby future bets, consider whether or not the horse you are betting on will have the necessary graded stakes earnings to be in the top 20 earners. The Grade 1 races with the higher purses (Santa Anita Derby, Florida Derby, Wood Memorial, Bluegrass Stakes, etc.) are run later in the spring and horses that run well in those prep races will end up with higher graded earnings. To be considered a safe bet, a horse typically needs around $200,000 in graded earnings to make the Derby.
