CUVEE Romps in Belmont Futurity (G1), winning by 8 1/4 lentgths.

Cuvee pulled away impressively to win the flat-mile $200,000 Futurity (Gr. 1) by 8 1/4 lengths.

"It was a good effort," said winning rider Jerry Bailey. "Equally impressive was when he got to the leader he put his ears up and waited for me to ask him to run. I’m impressed. He’s a nice horse."

Cuvee — a Kentucky-bred chestnut colt by Carson City, out of Christmas Star (Star de Naskra) — improved his record to 4-0-1 from five starts with earnings of $360,704 for owners Ron Winchell and Spendthrift Farm. He won the 6 1/2-furlong Saratoga Special (Gr. 2) on Aug. 13 at Saratoga by 7 1/2 lengths in his previous start.

"We’re very pleased with his race today," said winning trainer Steve Asmussen. "He won going a mile and he looked as brilliant today as he did at Saratoga on a different track."

A half interest in the spectacular graded stakes winning two-year-old CUVEE (Carson City – Christmas Star by Star de Naskra) has been purchased by Spendthrift Farm and partners.
The Lexington, Kentucky nursery acquired the interest since CUVEE’s arrival at Saratoga, where he is preparing for the August 13 running of the Grade II Special. Bred in Kentucky by the late Verne H. Winchell, CUVEE campaigns in the colors of Winchell Thoroughbreds, and is trained by Steve Asmussen.

CUVEE is one of 63 stakes winners sired by Carson City, a Mr. Prospector son who is currently vying with A.P. Indy for leadership of the 2003 sire’s table. His dam Christmas Star, a multiple stakes producer by Champion Sprinter Star de Naskra, is three-parts-sister to Olympio, a grade one winning millionaire who has sired more than 20 stakes winners. She’s also half-sister to the dams of Spendthrift stallion, Wild Wonder (a multiple graded stakes winner of $639,036) and of another Winchell-bred star, Early Flyer, a graded stakes winner of $371,140 to date
